Carolina Patchworks

Randomness… Jane Edition

Thank you everyone for the comments and compliments.  🙂

1.  It does feel abso-freakin-loutely awesome to have the blocks done.

2.  It took about 9 months overall to make the blocks (I worked on blocks every Friday).  There were a couple breaks sprinkled in there.

3.  I cracked up at the labor of love comment… I think growing two kids was easier!

4.  What am I going to do with it?  Sean says I should put it in the shop with a price tag of $12,000.  Ha!  Yeah, not going to happen.  It’s going to live in my sewing room.  I’ll finally have a quilt for me!  (Seriously, it’s freezing in this room and I have no quilts to use. 🙁 I want to finish it while it’s still cold! ).  I am slightly afraid to use it since it took forever to make and I don’t want to mess it up.

5.  This is my backing.  And phew, I have enough of it. It’s from Maypole as well.

6.  I have no idea what to bind it in.  I don’t want to use the purple that is going in the sashing because if I’m going to do the work for the scalloping, I want it to really stand out!  I don’t like either of the other purples next to the sashing/scallop color.  I don’t think red would pop.  So I’m left with yellow or light green I guess?  Opionions welcome!!

7.  Quilting.  I have no clue.  Please vote!  The options are:

a) a dense meander/stipple.  I do this on almost all my quilts.  I could get it done in 1-2 days and it would look good (from a technical standpoint).  It would also give that cool puckery look since the fabrics were not pre-washed.

b) stitch in the ditch along the sashing.  Kinda boring.  Huge chance for folds in the backing.  But would highlight the blocks some I guess.

c) stitch in the ditch AND special stitching on each block like Jane.  If I were a die-hard hand quilter I would so do this.  But I’m not.  I could do stitching on each block like Jane but on the machine.  That would be a b@*%& on a machine though.  Possible though, just not the most fun and would take FOREVER.

d) have a long-armer do it.  But then I’d have to wait for it and I’d have to let it out of my sight.  Cost issue with this one too.

This pic may be of help (that’s A1 through F-6):

I hate inside pictures.  The sun was hitting the left side and not the right and it’s just all messed up but lookie!  I’m in love. <3

One vote for (A). It’s a Carolina Patchworks quilt, it has to be meander-quilted!

So are you saying I’m predictable? Hrumph. 😛

  3. John says:

the men will stand united on this one — i say go with your signature quilting style. and, even before you said the two choices, my mind was already on green binding … so there’s my vote for that, too! are you going to hang it in your sewing room, or have it out to be used? you should totally show this … like at a quilt show or something … not that I know anything about those things, but it seems like people should be able to see it in person!

  4. Jeri says:

I can’t wait to see the finished product! It looks beautiful so far, the purple was VERY MUCH the way to go. :o)

  5. emily says:

I don’t know if I’m going to hang it up or not. It’s a huge quilt (and there are 6 windows and 2 dormers in the room so all the available floor to ceiling wall space is taken up with bookcases) so there really isn’t even any room.

I’d be afraid it would be poo-pooed at quilt shows since it isn’t properly appliquéd and all. I’ll have a one-hour showing at Wish. Hehe. 🙂

And I’m totally thrilled with the purple too. There is so much green in the blocks that it isn’t ending up too dark or anything.

  6. Jennifer says:

Gorgeous quilt and backing fabric! I would either go with (A), the dense meander/stipple.

  7. Jennifer says:

    Ooops, disregard the ‘either’!

  8. Heather says:

Wow, again, it looks great. I personally would spend the money and intrust it with a good longarm quilter who can spend some good time doing a lovely custom job on it. I did that with a quilt that I spent 7 years completing. Seriously, I wouldn’t sell that quilt for any amount of money.

  9. Natys says:

Hey, that quilt is awsome!!! y wasnt so sure about the colors but finally is great.

SO amazing!!! I love the backing color and I would personally go with the green thread. And the suggestion of (a) dense meander/stipple. I’m so impressed. What a wonderful heirloom!

  11. Heather says:

Oh, and I forgot to give reasons for choosing (d)……..

You spent so much time and effort, and patience and time, and energy and time and……….well, lots of time on each of these blocks to make up this wonderful quilt. I feel as though if you meandered through it you would loose some of that work. A longarmer could really make each one of those blocks stand out and really show the detail and time you put into them all.
So go for it Emily, splurge on this one quilt and have it done!

  12. Bored worker says:

I think you should let a longarmer quilt it for you. Just like Heather said – you spent lots and lots of time and effort. I’m sure there is someone in close to home that has a longarmer. But don’t let Sean talk you into selling it. It’s yours and besides you can’t sell it for money – you used someone’s pattern and you can’t profit from it – just like you have on your quilt patterns you sell. People can’t make a quilt and profit from your patterns.

  13. abby says:

Ok, so I say green binding for sure. this would really POP. I think you should spend the money and get it quilted by a long arm quilter. If you mandered and it was done in 2 days I don’t think you would feel satisfied.

  14. emily says:

Selling it was a just a joke. No way would that happen.

Technically the quilt is out of copyright since Miss Jane died quite a while ago (1896). The patterns put out by Brenda are technically (from a legal standpoint) just a tool since the pattern was not hers to start with. Brenda has a copyright on the book (can’t photocopy it and sell it) and a trademark on the name Baby Jane but not the block and quilt designs themselves since again, Jane designed the blocks. So technically I could sell it but not as a “Baby Jane Quilt.” But again, this isn’t an issue since it’s not going to be sold.

  15. Cathy says:

I vote for dense meandering and let me know when you will bring it to Wish for the show and tell…I want to see it in person!!

  16. Rachel says:

I choose e – Send it out for handquilting! I suppose that would completely blow the budget, but think how great it would look! 🙂
