March 2009

As your usual author is now enjoying frozen custard with her daughter on one of the season’s beautiful first few days, we pirates cannot resist the temptation to continue to share gratuitously with you, our captive audience.

It’s a little-known fact that in Carolina Patchworks’ early days, long before it acquired the laser-like focus on quilts it enjoys today, it experimented with a variety of alternative types of products.  Some (children’s clothing) stuck around longer than others (burp cloths), but a few particularly esoteric efforts have been lost to the winds of time.  Until now, that is.  I believe this unique item speaks for itself, but I would like to draw your attention to the careful hand stitching, environmentally-friendly* reuse of materials, and zen-like simplicity of the entire affair.  Oh, and it’s shiny too.

*In the interests of full disclosure, this piece may have been more environmentally friendly had the juice drinks not been purchased expressly for this purpose.

Pirate Post

While your usual author is away taking an allergy-ridden child to the pediatrician — for the second time today, following Liam’s earlier visit, following which he is currently deeply medicated and slumbering — we (blog pirate aka “Sean” aka “Dad”) have staged a temporary coup and are posting in her absence so that we may bring you coverage of an amusing anecdote from said four-year-old allergy-ridden child on the way out the door to the doctor.

Dad: “Be good at the doctor, okay?  Listen to Mommy.”

Maeve (vaguely shocked and bewildered): “Listen to WHO?!?”

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog.  Aaaaaarr!

Ah, Jane, how I’m so incredibly thrilled you are done…

My favorite blocks (though they’re all pretty cool):

And my favorite triangles:

And this one has my favorite fabric too:

And my favorite corners (yes I picked two even though there are only four total):

Super cool scalloped edges:

By the creek (which has *just* enough water in it to have the sweet babbling brook sounds)…

And relaxing in the flat(!!) yard…

The hill… this is why I had to wait until it dried out a bit.  I think it’s steeper than the photo shows.

Why did I have to pick a photo spot so freakin’ far away?  At least when the creek floods there’s no chance of it reaching the house!

Oh, and this picture too. ;-)

My line isn’t high enough for a quilt this big and there is no way I’m carrying a ladder down there.

So that’s my Jane.  I still can’t believe she’s done.  I’ve taken two naps under her and she’s amazingly warm.  Wub.

Happy National Quilting Day!  What quilt did you work on today?

I worked on… oh wait, I didn’t work on any quilts today <grumble grumble>.

Today was all about mulch.  And weeds.  And dirt.  Yuck.  I like gardening (think Bree Van de Kamp style gardening) not heavy labor gardening. <grumble grumble>.

The Colcannon Cannon

Tonight at dinner Liam flung his colcannon across the kitchen.  It was, ahem, rather humerous.

I’m working on approximately 3,394,192 quilts and random ideas right now.  Eventually I’ll post one or two of them.  Oh, and Jane.  It finally stopped raining today so as soon as I can treck down the hill without sliding onto my tush I’ll take some pictures.
