“But I wanted a haircut.”

Maeve came up to me this morning holding her head very oddly.  I didn’t think much of it because she’s five and five-year-olds tend to do odd things.  Then I realized that she looked different.

Maeve apparently decided that she needed a haircut (nevermind the fact that she got one less than a month ago).

So she cut her own hair.

A huge chunk right out of the front.

Four days before First Day of School Pictures.  And the first day of school.

When I asked her if she had cut her hair, she said, “Yes, I’m sorry.  But I wanted a haircut.”

(Note to self:  No pics in the kitchen in the morning.  The sun is blinding.)

I tried to take away the hacked look and I guess it looks slightly better now (the pictures if from before I tried to fix it).  But it still looks really bad (am I going to Mommy Hell for saying that?).  I guess I could take her to get a real haircut and get real bangs to cover it up but I hate bangs.  HATE them.  I just see them plastered to her forehead with sweat for the rest of the summer.  Yuck.

The crime scene:

I told her she had to clean up all the papers and craft supplies so I could vacuum it up.  Chances of her cooperating with this?  Zilch.

Oh, no! I just had the same scenerio two months ago…what is it with 5 yr olds? I feel the same way about the bangs…we are in the middle of growing them out-it’s painful!

OH my. You’re totally not going to Mommy Hell for saying it looks bad! Doesn’t every little girl have this story? Even my brother has one, but his cut the wiskers off the cat, just one side before he got caught, she walked around tilted for a weeks!

I’m sorry…I know you feel bad. I would leave it the way it is so that she has a great story to tell for the rest of her life with pictures to prove it :-)

I did the same thing when I was four while cutting out Valentines.

My daughter and her friend did the same thing just before class pix many years ago. We laugh at that picture every time we pull it out. There are more memories because of the matching chunks missing from their bangs than if they had gone to school all primped and proper. The same with braces–”OMG I still had my braces back then???” Enjoy their foibles.

i think she looks beautiful…she’s asserting her independence and her own personal style. After all it’s only hair – it will grow back. Wait until she becomes a teenager……
