Today’s Goals

Posted on by in Misc

1. Sew something. Anything. Mini quilts for Maeve’s room are top on the list.

2. Learn how to pronounce the following:

  • Mukilteo
  • Snohomish
  • Puyallup
  • Skagit
  • Sammamish
  • Issaquah
  • Snoqualmie
  • Chelan
  • Skykomish
  • Skokomish
  • Duwamish
  • Cle Elum
  • Wenatchee

Does the community college have How to Pronounce Area Names 101 for the newbies? I live in Seattle in King County. If it were anywhere else I’m not sure I’d be able to pronounce where we lived.

3. Muster up the nerve to find the Seattle MQG. I really enjoyed the Triangle folks though I had the biggest anxiety attack on the way to the first meeting (and second and third…). Hello. My name is Emily and I’m as shy as shy can be (Market is a nightmare for me). Maybe this task should be moved to next week.

4. Take a nap. I’m exhausted.

    If I remember correctly, “Mook-ah-tee-oh” is how you say the first one… I never figured the other ones out when I visited…

    Can’t wait to see the minis!

  2. emily says:

    That’s totally not how I guessed that one was pronounced! I got stuck at Muk — kinda like ‘Yuck’.

  3. Alicia says:

    •Puyallup– Say ** Pooh-wall-UP

  4. Jennifer says:

    Welcome to the neighborhood! I had just discovered your blog right before you posted about moving to Seattle…I live in Sammamish! So I have been following your blog ever since. About the Modern Quilt Guild: I am a part of it but not involved in many planning details. Katie from Sew Katie Did (the blog) is a founder so you can contact her if you like. Our next sew-in date is Nov 6, 2010 10:00am – 4:00pm at Woodland Park Presbyterian Church and you are certainly welcome. It is not formal at all, we just sit around and sew

    Now, pronunciations. Fun huh
    * Mukilteo- Muck-ill-tea-oh
    * Snohomish- Snow-home-ish
    * Puyallup- poo (or pue)- yal (like the name Hal)-up
    * Skagit-S-ka (like the ca in cat)- jit
    * Sammamish- Saw-M’am-mish (like fish)
    * Issaquah- Iss (like the iss in miss)-saw-quaw
    * Snoqualmie- Snow-qual-me
    * Chelan- She (like the she in shed)- lan (like man)
    * Skykomish- Sky-Koe-mish
    * Skokomish- Skoe-koe-mish
    * Duwamish- Do-wa-mish
    * Cle Elum- Clay-El (like saying the letter L)- um
    * Wenatchee- When-a (short a, like saying ahhhhh)- chee

    Hope that helps and hope to see you at the MQG!

    Jennifer rocks. I’m sitting here in front of the computer sounding them out. If anyone were here right now you’d probably be laughing at me. 😉

    My guesstimations on pronunciation were wrong on almost all of them.

    So I have until 11/6 to overcome my meeting-new-group-of-people-fears…

  6. Sandie says:

    Come and join us! It’s not a huge group (12-15 usually), and we’ve only been meeting since this Spring so everybody is new. We get a couple more quilters each meeting and we’re having a blast ~ this is a very laid-back (Seattle-style) group. I come from South Seattle (Des Moines, technically, and you pronounce the last “s” as a “z”) so if you need help finding your way just let me know.

    And Jennifer does rock – she described them perfectly!

  7. Ellen says:

    As a true Washington native, I can testify that Jennifer’s pronunciations are on it! She has you covered

  8. emily says:

    I’m totally loving the Seattle-laid-back-style of everything. *Very* different than Raleigh and Completely-Totally-Utterly-Absolutely different than it was in DC (home before Raleigh).

    I was thinking Des Moines was said like the Iowa version with no ‘s’ at all. We are in West Seattle… in an area that we also mispronounced until our realtor corrected us. I just hope I’m pronouncing ‘Seattle’ correctly at this point 😉

    Please someone make me go on 11/6. I know I’ll have fun… it’s just the getting over the freaking out part.

  9. Abby says:

    No worries, I lived in tacoma for 8 years and I still can not pronounce most of those. 🙂

  10. You should absolutely go to the Modern Quilt guild meeting. People there will LOVE your quilts!

    I’m not outgoing either so I understand how you feel, but I’m sure you’ll be glad you went.

  11. Gail says:

    Hi…I live about 1 1/2 hours north of you…on the coast …right up against the Canadian border. Welcome to Wa State and congrats on your book.
    I have just discovered your patterns and love them! Are you aware of anyone that does up kits for your patterns?
    Good luck on your ventures with the MQG!
    Regards from Gail in Wa State

    Love, love your patterns….just discovered you thru hawthorne fabric …I just ordered bundle # one from you!! Welcome to Seattle….I am from Vancouver, Canada but I live in Kirkland . I am an instant fan of your work and hope to meet you one day!

  13. Chris says:

    Watch KOMO 4 news – that is how we learned when we lived there. Good luck – we lived between Mukilteo and Everett – our address was Everett – lucky me – I could pronounce it.

  14. Cathy A says:

    Hi–
    It sounds like you are liking things okay here. I saw your blog a few times just before you moved out, and then saw you’d been to the SMQG meeting. I have only gone to a few, and hope to be able to go to more. Hopefully this Friday’s meeting. I’m in Kirkland.

    I love your patterns, and I’m sure your book will be great!
