Unmixing Remix: A Preview of Quilt Remix – Part 1

Posted on by in Books

Two years later Quilt Remix is here. It combines my love of the tradition of quilting with a more modern aesthetic. While I can appreciate a 100 year old Log Cabin quilt, it’s just not something I would chose to have in my home. Quilt Remix takes design elements from some of the most storied quilt blocks/designs and gives them a very modern makeover.

It was an amazing journey that started with the daring lady, writing a proposal, waiting, screaming, signing a contract, writing, picking fabrics, sewing, editing and packing it all up. Then came the edits, illo revisions, more edits, reading, checking, and reading again. And all of that while not saying anything about it. That perhaps was the hardest part of the whole process. I remember sitting down that first weekend to start writing the first pattern. I had written tons of patterns before this but I could not think of a single word to type. I actually sat there staring at a blank computer screen. Phew.

So now that we are just a few days away from it actually being release, let’s look at some of the projects.

First up is the fabulous Pinwheel 1 quilt on the cover. This was not actually part of the original proposal but it soon became one of my favorites.

Floaty shapes in different sizes all smushed together have made it to our home too. Shocking I know. Who in the world takes their quilt designs and plasters it all over their walls? Oh, right. I do.

Each project in the book (not counting the last one) is shown in two different fabrics. One is a more traditional set of prints and the second is a bolder, more modern set of prints.

(I was too busy drooling over the beautiful skies to notice how badly the quilt needed a date with the iron.)

This project (as well as most of the projects in the book) have instructions to make the quilt in four sizes — crib, lap, twin and queen.

Don’t let the appliquéing scare you away from this pattern. If you aren’t feeling up to the traditional methods, try raw-edge appliquéing. It gives the quilt fabulous texture without taking a lifetime to complete and even beginners can do it!

The book is now available for purchase in the shop. It won’t start shipping until Monday, November 15, but if you’re itching to buy it you now can! I’ll even sign it if you want! (Usually the only people who want my signature is someone also asking for money to pay a bill or something crazy like that.)
