Trippy, bubbly, postmodern, whimsical (or maybe even poetic) quilt using Amy Butler’s Lotus collection and her new solids.

Perhaps from now on I should mention all quilts are made by Emily and Maeve.
In the decades since his first Sisyphian pursuit of a huge barrel-chucking gorilla, Mario’s legacy has built into mythic status. It was inevitable that some glorious day his epic battles with the infamous goombas and formidable (for turtles, at least) koopa troopas would be immortalized in that most ancient of media, the Quilt.
In this smaller sibling of our Super Mario Hidden Level quilt, Mario finds a Fire Flower — and prepares to power up with fireball-flinging flower power!
So grab a power-up and relax underneath this heroic iconography to relive this most horizontal of sagas, or perhaps use it to decorate your own castle. Whether you are a princess or a plumber, or even an unfortunate mushroom named Toad, this life-size homage cannot help but inspire you on your own quest for a plumber or princess (or, well, whatever mushrooms quest for which we shan’t go into here).
Approximately 40 x 50 inches inches (101 x 127 cm). Big enough for two little kids or one big kid.

This is the third one (first, second) and is now listed on Etsy.
6.24.08 edit — Another one completed.
New quilt on Etsy. This was originally going to be my quilt but I made so many diamonds that I had enough for two quilts.
All done and on Etsy.
I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of the quilt with a munchkin before they went to bed so I went into Mr. Liam’s room after he was asleep and had him pose for this. He snored through the whole thing.
Fun quilt on Etsy with Sandi Henderson’s Ginger Blossom line. The first sale fell through, this is the link to the relisted quilt.
There are a couple slight differences but basically the same. I love all these prints… just perfect for the little ones.
6.16.08 edit — Another one!

Both of my models were in bed, so, uh, here is a picture of the quilt in their chair!
Beautiful strips of floral prints wrap around rich, jewel toned purple diamonds in this quilt. The backing is a red floral and bird print and the binding is purple. Quilted in a meandering pattern with a variegated red, coral and yellow thread. Made with fabrics from April Cornell’s Maypole line.

GAME OVER
Play Again?

The first of many quilts using this fabric. I love this line. It makes me want to go to the beach and veg with a margarita.
Maeve was very sad when she saw me sewing this quilt and it wasn’t for her. She told me that the monkeys were her favorite fabric and asked if I would please make her a quilt with it. She was quite pleased when I told her I would.
Some close up shots.
Back and binding.
Back detail.
Great for snuggling up with after a hard day being 3.
Fun quilt with the Urban Chik’s Swell fabric line.
(Hopefully the pictures look ok since I’m editing them on my laptop and it has a reputation when it comes to colors and Photoshop.)
This is the same pattern I used in my silk quilt but done in a cotton print. I had to try it out to see how it worked and I think it came out well. It’s now up on Etsy.
Step 13. Forget to take pictures of the trimming and binding as you do them.
Ok, so I totally forgot to take pictures of the last couple steps. Oops. But it’s all done now.
It’s really sunny out today so there are tons of shadows. Maybe next time we should try pics on the deck in the shade. My quest for how to take good pictures of quilts continues.
Carrie and Karen came on over today for an Etsy get together and to learn how to make quilts.
Our project was a doll quilt inspired by the log cabin pattern.
First we piece…
And then we quilt…
I apparently forgot the binding pictures. Oops.
All done!
Carrie got to sew for the first time and Karen learned that there is fish in a bag fabric. She’s thrilled.
It was fun ladies!
Recall the wind in your hair, the tang of smoking rubber on asphalt, the heat of your exploding Formula-1 racer as you wipe out again, and agin, and again against a billboard or into another car in this classic and hair-pullingly difficult archetype of the modern racing genre, Atari’s Pole Position.
Up close one can see only an impressionistic blotches of random pixels, but as one steps back from this massive, four-person-wide quilt, the image of that immortal race car begins to make yet one more unending lap around the track.
Not intended for use while driving.
- Approximately 110 x 50 inches (279.5 x 127 cm).
- Grey backing and red binding.
- Made from 100% cotton fabric and batting.
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low.
- Pieced and quilted by machine in smoke-free, pet-free, and geek-friendly home.
And Maeve wins!
First the wind blows one way …
And then the other …
Photographing a 110″ wide quilt is tough even with almost no breeze.
So what’s next in the videogame quilt world? I’m not sure. Pacman maybe. Or Duck Hunt. Or … Suggest something!
Etsy has finally allowed us to have apostrophes in our titles. Amazing. Lovely. Now if they could just fix it so the top of my page doesn’t read “CarolinaPatchworks’s Shop Announcement”.
I’ve noticed that when I’m in the middle of piecing a huge quilt I tend to babble less here. The current quilt is 110″ x 50″. That’s pretty big. I should be able to finish the piecing on that this morning assuming Liam takes his morning nap.
And thanks to Etsy’s revived Alchemy feature I have two large custom quilts to make. Do you want a custom quilt? I can make you one too!
I’m on the front page again with the big silk quilt.
It’s getting so warm here. We should enjoy it before it decides to be 100 with a heat index of 110 (grumble, grumble).
Spring has sprung and I’m loving white quilts right now. So crisp and fresh and full of flowers. I finished these three small quilts last night. I’ll be posting them on Etsy over the next couple of days.
(Sorry for the less than perfect pic.)
Piet Mondrian was my inspiration when designing this quilt. I think it came out well and it is now for sale on Etsy.
I’m on the front page of Etsy right now with this quilt! (Yes, I had to copy the whole page and not just the top.)
My bag is featured in this beautiful treasury by SweetgumHandbags.
The project for the first part of the week is new silk curtains for the kitchen and family room. These have to be the most boring thing in the world to sew. I have 9 panels to sew. I have 2 done. Yawn.
Quilts are much more fun.
I listed a new quilt last night on Etsy. It’s a bit more modern than recent ones.
First there was Galaga. Then there was Zelda. Now there is Mario.

Whether you are a princess or a plumber, or even an unfortunate mushroom named Toad, this life-size homage cannot help but inspire you on your own quest for a plumber or princess (or, well, whatever mushrooms quest for which we shan’t go into here).
- Approximately 64 inches (162.5 cm) square.
- Light blue backing and black binding.
- Made from 100% cotton fabric and batting.
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low.
- Pieced and quilted by machine in smoke-free, pet-free, and geek-friendly home.
Also for sale on Etsy…
And Galaga.
And as of March 21, we now have Pole Position.
Liam went to his first Etsy meetup today. His shirt says, “My mom is so crafty she made ME!” from Etsy seller MuthaCrafter.
I promise he had fun there! No pics from the actual meetup since Sean had the small camera.
Oh Hrumph. I know views (and hearts) really mean nothing when it comes to sales but it was really nice to see the counters go up and up and just be in awe of how many people had looked at my quilts.

| Today at roughly 2:15pm EST, there was a failure on one of our load balancing machines that rendered the site inaccessible. We recognized the failure immediately, but were unable to restore full connectivity until 3:30pm EST.
Unfortunately, tracking down the issue required all of our servers to be reset, which in turn erased all view tally data from listings. It is unlikely that we will be able to retrieve this data to bring them back, but we will try. We’re now investigating the causes of the issue, and tightening everything back up. Those that had a showcase scheduled for today will be refunded. We apologize for any inconvenience this outage has caused, and we’re doing our best to ensure that it won’t happen again. |

I’m trying some new ways of photographing quilts. It really is amazing how hard it is to get a *good* photo of a quilt. I think it’s something that would sell much better in real life and not online. It’s such a tactile item. Maybe I should just open up a quilt shop downtown. :-P Ha!
We had quite the photo shoot this afternoon.
Hopefully all the changes will be in the shop by the end of the week.
Did you know if you sew together 2080 triangles (half white, half patterned) that you’ll end up with 260 pinwheel blocks? And if you sew all those pinwheel blocks together with the 4 extra at the corners you’ll end up with this pretty pinwheel quilt?
Ok, so I didn’t really sew together that many triangles. I started with squares, marked the diagonal, sewed 1/4″ on either side and then cut them apart ending up with two triangles sewn together. So after gobs of thread and hours and hours (don’t ask how many) of sewing I finished it. And I think it looks pretty cool. I quilted it densely and it puckered up beautifully in the wash.
And, of course, it’s now listed on Etsy.
Maeve has fallen in love with this quilt and has claimed it as hers. She woke up last night a little sick and asked for the new quilt to come into her room to keep her warm. So if you like it and want to buy it, I suggest you do so soon otherwise you might have to wrestle her for it.
What’s next? Mario. Pattern is done. Fabric is washed. Woohoo!
Just listed.
It’s hard to get good pictures of quilts. There are angles, lighting and the fact that sometimes they are just huge.
Today’s project was to get pictures of 3 small quilts and Maeve wanted to help. See?
Sean is my trusty quilt stand with legs.
Just like Daddy.
She insisted on holding the small Dick and Jane quilt so I could take pictures of it. She was so proud of herself.
And then like most every other 3 year old, she got bored and wanted to go play.
Both Dick and Jane quilts should be up on Etsy next week.
I’m not sure how much traffic goes from here to my Etsy page but just in case…
I have a new SALE section and am filling it up with with items that I will no longer be making. I’ve decided to slim things down a bit and just focus on quilts and not the random baby stuff I kept making. I have a couple more sets of burp cloths to go up and then that’s it. There are also doll quilts, baby shoes and a bag that have been marked down.
So check it out and buy something! lol
(I feel like such a sales(wo)man in this post!)
So way back when I started a pineapple block quilt with reproduction 1930s fabrics. Well, it’s finally finished and up on Etsy. It’s a little hard to put this one up in the shop. I kinda got attached to it but it doesn’t go with the decor or colors in my house at all.
I’ve had the Zelda tune running through my head for weeks now. Now up on Etsy.
The Legend of Zelda may have introduced an entire generation to the joy of colorful worlds of monsters and heroes filled with melodies of bleeps and bloops, all contained in a little plastic box connected with wires to the TV.
Bosses and Triforces, dungeons and new swords, secret doors and endless maps; these inspired fear and joy beyond anything a 256×224 set of pixels wavering on an ancient CRT had any right to do. Return to that world by way of a 64-by-64 grid of pixels emblazoned in all their low-resolution glory across a 100% cotton quilt. Octorok and Leever threaten Link amidst the rocky Overworld’s bushes and water, as a Darknut patrols in his Underworld dungeon.
- Approximately 64″ square.
- Made from 100% cotton fabric and batting.
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low.
- Pieced and quilted by machine in smoke-free, pet-free, and geek-friendly home.
And some details:
Fun photo time outside.
So what’s next? Flowers… paisely… gingham… get the idea? I need to do a girly, flowery quilt or two and then I’ll do Mario.
It seems like I did the piecing on this one forever ago. But it is finally done and up on Etsy.
Zelda and finishing the 30s Reproduction Pineapple quilt are next up.
All done and up on Etsy. I think Sean secretly wishes it won’t sell so he can keep it.
Gotta love the quilt stand with legs.
Sean playing on the big screen.
What shall I do next? I’m thinking Mario Brothers or Zelda.
A new Christmas Table Runner now up on Etsy.
So I sat down the other day and made myself a Christmas listing schedule. It’s rather ambitious but I think I can tackle it. My first listing to go up was a beautiful quilt that is very (very) similar to the wedding quilt I made with the same Shangri-la fabrics.
So tonight I’m sitting in front of the computer staring at the Etsy listing screen trying to figure out how to describe this quilt. I had no words so the listing ended up being a little silly.
Ah yes, more Dick and Jane loveliness now up on Etsy.
Only Sean will know the correct tone of voice for that title.
Yup, finally tried my hand at a bag. This one is for sale on Etsy. Now to take the plunge and try a bigger size.
Even a spiffy pocket/divider!
This one came out exactly like I wanted it to.
Strips of a million Moda Sanctuary patterns, pieced together in different widths, and then into different lengths, then into squares on an angle and then finally into a quilt.
Throw in some dense quilting, a quick whirl though the washer and you have puckery patchwork perfection.
The Triangle-area Etsians met this morning at CupAJoe in Raleigh. Good talk, good fun and I now know there are some people in Etsy forums that annoy other people too. I can’t wait until next time ladies!
Feel free to comment with your name, Etsy shop name and where you are in the picture because I’m sitting here with a stack of business cards trying to figure out who is who. I need to know who it was that mentioned the show in Johnston County. ![]()
