Look! Donkey Kong! In a quilt! Want to snuggle with a big gorilla?
Yeah, the quilting took forever…
I guess I should have mentioned this earlier in the week eh? The video game quilts were mentioned in a webisode this week on Threadbanger. It’s towards the end of the clip. And I just have to say — hexagon.
As soon as I have some free time (ha!) I plan on doing more of them for the shop.
This was a custom order through Etsy. All finished and off to the post office tomorrow.
In the decades since his first Sisyphian pursuit of a huge barrel-chucking gorilla, Mario’s legacy has built into mythic status. It was inevitable that some glorious day his epic battles with the infamous goombas and formidable (for turtles, at least) koopa troopas would be immortalized in that most ancient of media, the Quilt.
In this smaller sibling of our Super Mario Hidden Level quilt, Mario finds a Fire Flower — and prepares to power up with fireball-flinging flower power!
So grab a power-up and relax underneath this heroic iconography to relive this most horizontal of sagas, or perhaps use it to decorate your own castle. Whether you are a princess or a plumber, or even an unfortunate mushroom named Toad, this life-size homage cannot help but inspire you on your own quest for a plumber or princess (or, well, whatever mushrooms quest for which we shan’t go into here).
Approximately 40 x 50 inches inches (101 x 127 cm). Big enough for two little kids or one big kid.
(See also: Galaga, Zelda, Mario, Pole Position, and Space Invaders)
Want a video game quilt? I now have custom order listings in my Etsy shop of quilts that have sold previously.
And a new design is coming soon too!

Recall the wind in your hair, the tang of smoking rubber on asphalt, the heat of your exploding Formula-1 racer as you wipe out again, and agin, and again against a billboard or into another car in this classic and hair-pullingly difficult archetype of the modern racing genre, Atari’s Pole Position.
Up close one can see only an impressionistic blotches of random pixels, but as one steps back from this massive, four-person-wide quilt, the image of that immortal race car begins to make yet one more unending lap around the track.
Not intended for use while driving.
- Approximately 110 x 50 inches (279.5 x 127 cm).
- Grey backing and red binding.
- Made from 100% cotton fabric and batting.
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low.
- Pieced and quilted by machine in smoke-free, pet-free, and geek-friendly home.
And Maeve wins!
First the wind blows one way …
And then the other …
Photographing a 110″ wide quilt is tough even with almost no breeze.
So what’s next in the videogame quilt world? I’m not sure. Pacman maybe. Or Duck Hunt. Or … Suggest something!
First there was Galaga. Then there was Zelda. Now there is Mario.
In the decades since his first Sisyphian pursuit of a huge barrel-chucking gorilla, Mario’s legacy has built into mythic status. - Approximately 64 inches (162.5 cm) square.
- Light blue backing and black binding.
- Made from 100% cotton fabric and batting.
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low.
- Pieced and quilted by machine in smoke-free, pet-free, and geek-friendly home.
Also for sale on Etsy…
And Galaga.
And as of March 21, we now have Pole Position.
I’ve had the Zelda tune running through my head for weeks now. Now up on Etsy.
The Legend of Zelda may have introduced an entire generation to the joy of colorful worlds of monsters and heroes filled with melodies of bleeps and bloops, all contained in a little plastic box connected with wires to the TV.
Bosses and Triforces, dungeons and new swords, secret doors and endless maps; these inspired fear and joy beyond anything a 256×224 set of pixels wavering on an ancient CRT had any right to do. Return to that world by way of a 64-by-64 grid of pixels emblazoned in all their low-resolution glory across a 100% cotton quilt. Octorok and Leever threaten Link amidst the rocky Overworld’s bushes and water, as a Darknut patrols in his Underworld dungeon.
- Approximately 64″ square.
- Made from 100% cotton fabric and batting.
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low.
- Pieced and quilted by machine in smoke-free, pet-free, and geek-friendly home.
And some details:
Fun photo time outside.
So what’s next? Flowers… paisely… gingham… get the idea? I need to do a girly, flowery quilt or two and then I’ll do Mario.
All done and up on Etsy. I think Sean secretly wishes it won’t sell so he can keep it.
Gotta love the quilt stand with legs.
Sean playing on the big screen.
What shall I do next? I’m thinking Mario Brothers or Zelda.
